Minnesota Skating Scholarship Fund provides financial support to Minnesota skaters who are motivated, have potential, and love skating.

Sarah Bazey

Sarah BazeySarah is a business executive, has served on numerous professional association and charitable boards at state, national, and international levels. She skated with both the Maplewood and St. Paul Figure Skating Clubs as an individual and team figure skater. Sarah has many years of coaching experience and served as an organizer for the 75th Anniversary Celebration for the SPFSC Gala with live music from the Minnesota Youth Symphony. Sarah is honored to serve as a board member for the MSS, “because it takes dedication and passion to compete in this beautiful sport, and if we can help skaters who sincerely need assistance, it is a gift to the skater, their supporters, and those of us who get to watch.”

Janet Carpenter

Janet Carpenter Janet learned to skate on Minnesota’s outdoor ponds and later joined the FSC of Minneapolis and the St. Paul FSC. As a student at the University of Minnesota, Janet and her partner, John Nightingale, trained for the 1952 Olympics on the ice at Williams Arena. Janet and John competed in two World Championships. Janet was team leader for the 1984 Olympics and judged two Olympic Games (including “Battle of the Brians”). Janet is married to Norm Carpenter and has three grown children. Janet’s three granddaughters all skate: Sean (former hockey player), Sky Li (figure skater), and Jia (speed skater). Janet has been a Board Member of Minnesota Skating Scholarship since it was created by Bob Mecay in 1991.

Tom Darden

Tom DardenTom is a Minneapolis attorney and business person. He also serves on many boards and community organizations. His daughter figure skates and plays hockey (and many other sports). His wife, Pat St. Peter, is an attorney and is President of United States Figure Skating. Tom enjoys reviewing the scholarship applications: “What these applications tell me is that the applicants aren’t just really good skaters, they’re also really good students and really good young people. They have exemplary work ethics. They’ve earned our support.”

Dede Disbrow

DeDe DisbrowDede has represented figure skating locally, nationally, and internationally as an athlete, coach, official, and in many other ways. Dede was a U.S. Figure Skating Figure and Freestyle Gold Medalist, U.S. Pair Gold Medalist, Canadian Figure and Freestyle Gold Medalist, and U.S. National Competitor. Dede is also a PSA rated Senior Level Coach who has coached U.S. National Championship Ladies and International Ladies. She is also a National Singles and Pairs Technical Specialist. Dede is active in the Braemar Figure Skating Club and is a long-time supporter and board member of Minnesota Skating Scholarship. Off the ice, Dede is involved in management of several businesses and foundations. She also enjoys showing American Saddlebreds.

Ann Eidson

Ann EidsonAnn is currently Skating Director of the St Paul Figure Skating Club and has extensive involvement in figure skating and the development of figure skaters. Ann is a U.S. Junior World and Senior Grand Prix Coach. She has been an International Coach since 1989 and has been a U.S National Championship Coach for 23 years. Ann has also participated at USFS Olympic Training Camps. Ann is a USOC and Dartfish Certified Video Analysis Technician. As a skater, Ann was a USFS Double Gold Medalist. Off the ice, Ann further supports figure skating as a Member of USFS Competition and Judges Committee, Treasurer of Minnesota Skating Scholarship, PSA Master Rated coach in Figures and Freestyle, and Sectional IJS Technical Specialist. Ann has also been a speaker at the PSA National Convention and at many seminars.

Kathleen Gazich

Kathleen GazichKathleen is a Master-Rated National Coach and Co-Head Professional at the Braemar City of Lakes Figure Skating Club. She has coached Minnesota skaters for over 25 years. Before becoming a coach, Kathleen skated for years with the Braemar City of Lakes Figure FSC and was coached by the legendary Eleanor Fisher. She skated professional with Stars on Ice and Disney on Ice. Kathleen lives in Minnetonka with her husband Bob and her three children. Kathleen volunteers her time to Minnesota Skating Scholarship because: “It feels great to be able to help deserving skaters with financial support to chase after their dreams.”

Mike Itzin

Mike ItzenMike is a USFS Gold Test Judge, VP of the Three Rivers FSC, VP of the Twin City Figure Skating Association, and a retired Manufacturing Executive. His daughter, Patti, is a PSA Master Rated Coach in the Northwest Metro area. Mike is currently working with the TCFSA to prepare for the 2016 USFS Nationals to be held at the Xcel Center in St Paul, January 16 – 24, 2016.

Lexie Kastner

Lexie KastnerLexie is a United States Figure Skating National Accountant and is an active volunteer in the St Paul FSC. She has served as Treasurer of Twin City Figure Skating Association and is currently the Secretary for Minnesota Skating Scholarship. Her daughter, Sara, was a National and International competitor and is a USFS National Judge, Controller, and Technical Specialist.

Loni Keenan

loni-keenanLoni is from the Burnsville-Minnesota Valley Figure Skating Club and has been coaching figure skating for over 21 years. She has coached numerous skaters to gold medals in figures, freestyle, and moves. She skated precision for several years and, later, coached synchro teams. Loni is a member of PSA. She has directed and produced numerous local ice shows for the past 18 years. In addition, Loni assisted in opening and closing ceremonies of the 1991 Nationals, coordinated the skating on the Ice Plaza during 1998 Worlds, and was a skating advisor and committee member for the 2000 World Synchronized Skating Championships. Loni attended Normandale Community College and lives in Edina.

Ann Klein

ann-kleinAnne grew up in a family of figure skaters. She has remained involved in the sport as a judge and has served on various local and national committees. She was the co-chair of the 1991 USFS National Championships at the Target Center and served a term as Midwest Vice President of USFS. Since retiring from the world of real estate she has been working with adults who are learning English as a second language. Anne, and husband Dick, have three children and eight grandchildren.

Herb Morgenthaler

Herb Morgenthaler Herb is a retired executive director of Target Corporation. Each of his three daughters were figure skaters with two becoming Minnesota State Champions. Herb serves on several community boards and is the former president of the Minnesota Skating Scholarship. Working with the scholarship is both rewarding and challenging. Herb believes that it’s rewarding to see the dedication and commitment of the applicants, and it’s challenging because we’re always looking at how we can do more for deserving skaters.

Julie Mattson Ostrow

Julie Mattson OstrowJulie is a registered dietitian and Vice President of Health and Wellness, Nutrition at Midwest Dairy Council in St. Paul. She comes from figure skating family and is the second of three generations active in the Minnesota figure skating community. Her mother, Janet Mattson, Rochester FSC, is a Gold Test judge and her daughter Emily, St. Paul FSC, is a Gold Medalist in Moves in the Field, a National Theater on Ice competitor and coach. Julie, St. Paul FSC, is a Gold Singles and Pairs judge and currently serves on the boards of TCFSA and MN Skating Scholarship as well as on the USFS Parents committee. Julie volunteers her time to Minnesota Skating Scholarship because: “The Minnesota figure skating is like a family. Supporting MMS is just one way I can give back to keep our Minnesota skating family growing strong.”

Lori Rothmund

Lori RothmundLori is President of Minnesota Skating Scholarship and has served on its board since 2008. For over 33 years, Lori has been involved with and has served the sport of figure skating. She is the mother of a USFS Gold medalist, and now grandmother of an 8 year old USFS competitor. Lori is a member of the St. Paul Figure Skating Club, she has served on its board for 25 years, and she been one of its delegates to the Twin City Figure Skating Association for 20 years. In addition, Lori has served as Monitor Chair for the US Synchronized Championships (2010), US National Figure Skating Championships (2008), and World Figure Skating Championships (1998). She served as Skater Services Chair for the World Synchronized Skating Championships (2000) and was Co-Chair for the Minnesota Ice Symphony (1997 & 1998). Also and notably, Lori was the Recipient of the Champion for Skating Award (2008). In her time away from figure skating, Lori is a Flight Attendant/Purser for Delta Airlines.
